I am intrigued by color.
Painting enables me to physically make & manipulate color. I use a combination of purchased oil paints and paints handmade from pigments. I fantasize discovering some color never before seen as I practice alchemy at my easel. Creating colors & color relationships that are subtly "new" is a source of constant delight.
I find experimentation irresistible.
Earlier in my life the abstraction and problem solving aspects of mathematics nourished my desire to experiment and led to a career in a scientific laboratory. Now abstraction and problem solving are an integral part of my painting process.
I am inquiring into a new geometry.
In my current work I cover over parts of a fully painted but irregular grid opening the space and disconnecting some of the lines. By "subtracting" information I move into a new space with its own mysterious language and marks. With this process I have become fascinated with the painting surface. Often I apply several layers of paint some of which gets rubbed away. In a curious way less has become more. The remaining grid lines serve to link the finished canvas together in time & space.
